My Teaching Philosophy

I want my students to feel empowered to uphold the principles of evidence-based practice and to create innovative and sustainable changes in healthcare that will further enhance patient outcomes. I want them to develop a passion for lifelong learning, demonstrate strong clinical judgment, and practice in accordance with the key ethical concepts of nursing: autonomy, equity, beneficence, non-maleficence, fidelity, and veracity. I want future nurses to understand the rationale behind every condition, treatment, and nursing action they perform. I want them to learn to love learning, and for their favorite question to become “why” so they may advance the scholarship of nursing. I believe it’s important to consider the internal and external factors that may influence a student’s ability to meet course outcomes while also fostering an appreciation of professionalism and accountability. I believe it is important to incorporate activities that will accommodate a variety of learning styles and preferences to promote improved student engagement, comprehension, and retention. Finally, I believe it is the educator’s responsibility to hold themselves to these same standards so they may serve as role models for future nurses.
